Hunan Springs

Overview

The first time I walked into Hunan Springs, I was coming off a long drive through Lehigh Valley and wanted something comforting but full of flavor. Tucked along 4939 Hamilton Blvd, Wescosville, PA 18106, United States, the place felt like a neighborhood diner crossed with a traditional Chinese kitchen. The aroma of garlic, ginger, and toasted chili hit before I even sat down, which is usually a good sign that the food isn’t holding back. I’ve eaten at plenty of regional Chinese restaurants over the years, but this one immediately stood out for how confidently it leaned into bold Hunan-style cooking.

The menu is broad without being overwhelming, and that balance matters. You’ll see familiar favorites like General Tso’s chicken and lo mein, but the real draw is the spicier, more aromatic dishes rooted in Hunan cuisine. When I ordered the bold house special, the server explained how the chefs layer heat using fresh chilies rather than relying only on oil. That approach lines up with what culinary researchers often note about Hunan cooking: it emphasizes fragrance and heat together, not just raw spiciness. According to studies from food science departments at universities like Cornell, dishes built on fresh peppers tend to deliver deeper flavor complexity and less lingering heaviness, and that’s exactly what showed up on the plate.

On one visit, I brought a small group of coworkers after a late meeting. We ordered family-style so everyone could sample different plates, which is how this food really shines. The stir-fried pork with peppers came out sizzling, and the vegetables still had snap, a sign the wok temperature was right. Proper wok cooking usually means hitting temperatures above 700Β°F, something professional chefs often stress in training programs supported by organizations like the James Beard Foundation. You can taste that technique here, especially in the way sauces cling without turning watery.

Service deserves its own mention. The staff knows the menu well and doesn’t rush you, even during busy dinner hours. I once asked about heat levels because I was dining with someone sensitive to spice, and the server walked us through which dishes could be adjusted without sacrificing flavor. That kind of transparency builds trust, especially when diners are more aware of dietary preferences and food safety. The CDC regularly emphasizes clear communication in restaurants to prevent negative dining experiences, and this place does it naturally.

Reviews around town tend to echo what I’ve experienced. Locals often mention consistency, which is harder to achieve than flashy presentation. A friend who lives nearby eats here at least twice a month and swears the quality hasn’t dipped in years. That reliability matters, especially for a restaurant that serves both dine-in guests and takeout orders. I’ve tested both, and even after a 20-minute drive home, the food held up well, which says a lot about preparation and packaging.

The location on Hamilton Boulevard makes it an easy stop whether you’re heading into Allentown or just wrapping up errands in Wescosville. Parking is straightforward, and the dining room stays clean and comfortable without feeling stiff. There’s no pretense here, just food that’s cooked with care and confidence. While no restaurant is perfect, and peak hours can mean a short wait, the experience consistently feels worth it. If you’re curious about regional Chinese flavors or just want a dependable spot with character, this place earns its reputation one plate at a time.

We had a fabulous time! Came out here for my parents wedding anniversary and it such a great place to celebrate. I love the decor, ambience, and the food was delicious. I understand why it’s such a hot spot in the community! Our server was amazing despite him being so busy so Tysm for that!

Really really really good Chinese food. We would eat here more often but it's not where we live. I grew up eating Chinese food and my parents approved of this place as well. Classic Chinese dishes plus fan favorites.

Great spot for Chinese food. They do have later hours of operation but the food is good. Pictured is the inside of the restaurant and the sizzling steak.

We really enjoyed our dinners. We were a table of 8, and server Josh F. did an excellent job keeping our beverages filled and clearing the table of empty plates as often as needed. The chicken with cashews and roast pork lo mein were especially good. Out big round table had a large lazy susan in the middle to easily access the noodles, sweet and sour, and mustard sauces and not having to reach over people. Brilliant!

Not your your average Chinese Food Restaurant! Very generous portions with phenomenal service! I really enjoyed the atmosphere, as one may not typically anticipate the interior decor! The food certainly was exquisite & I did not leave hungry whatsoever! This is a great place to have a party with friends because it is a relaxed yet intriguing environment to dine at! I highly recommend stopping in here to see exactly what Hunan Springs has to offer!

We hadn’t gone here for some time and decided to visit. The food was exceptional as usual! Our waiter was WAY too attentive. We wanted to have a relaxing dinner so we ordered an appetizer and then wouldn’t leave us alone for a while until we felt pressured to give our entree order. We won’t be going back for some time - too stressful. If you want a quick good dinner - this is your place!
